Remembering John Clegg (1950-2020)

We were sad to learn of the death of John Clegg (pictured bottom right, 2015), former Vice-President of Manchester TUC and have set up this page for people to share their memories, photos etc.

Our condolences to the innumerable people whose lives he touched, improved and enriched, and particularly John’s daughters Nicole and Melanie.

John’s funeral took place on Friday 20th November at Stockport crematorium, but of course due to coronavirus few were able to attend. Many friends and comrades showed their respects by lining Kingsway, spaced out and not forming a gathering, opposite his house. John’s coffin was draped with the trades council banner.

The funeral was livestreamed and a recording is available for a few days here:

Instead of flowers donations are welcome to the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit via https://gmiau.org/donate. John was instrumental in establishing the unit, which arose from his anti-deportation work, specifically the tremendous Viraj Mendis Defence Campaign.
